US Pediatric Hospitalizations Complicated by Acute Kidney Injury and Dialysis From 1997 to 2022
JAMA Network Open 10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2026.35547September 22, 2026 at 11:00 AM EDT
In this retrospective study of the KID, the absolute number and rate of pediatric hospitalizations complicated by AKI and AKI-D increased between 1997 to 2022. Factors contributing to the substantial growth may include improved definitions and recognition of AKI, inclusion of a growing number of older and medically complex youth at high risk for AKI, and optimized diagnosis documentation. Given our understanding of the long-term impact of AKI, it is important to assess for preventable causes and to optimize care of those with AKI and AKI-D.
