Can incorporation of a preoperative personalized contralateral breast cancer (CBC) risk counseling tool, which includes genetic testing results, impact patient knowledge of CBC risk and rate of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM)?In this randomized clinical trial of 346 patients with breast cancer, those randomized to quantitative counseling with a visual decision support tool more accurately reported their CBC risk compared with those randomized to standard counseling. However, no differences in the propensity toward or uptake of CPM was found between the 2 study arms. These findings suggest that patients who were counseled with a personalized CBC risk tool were better informed of their CBC risk, although being better informed did not appear to impact CPM decisions.
