A Payment Incentive to Improve Confirmatory Testing in Men With Prostate Cancer

Was a payment incentive, as part of a multifaceted intervention, associated with an increase in confirmatory testing completion (magnetic resonance imaging, repeat prostate biopsy, or genomics test) among men with low-risk prostate cancer? In a cohort study of 6609 patients, confirmatory testing completion increased over the study period, from 2017 to 2022. Patients who received the incentive had a 7.5% increase in predicted probability of confirmatory testing relative to the preincentive period, but this finding was not statistically significant. This study suggests that the payment incentive was not associated with a robust increase in confirmatory testing, highlighting the potential as well as the challenges of alternative payment model development.
