Is clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), the age-related expansion of blood cells with leukemia-associated mutations, associated with the development of myocarditis and pericarditis? In a cohort of generally healthy middle-aged adults, the presence of CHIP was associated with a more than 70% increased risk of developing new-onset myocarditis and pericarditis, with significantly increased risks observed for both and .These findings suggest that CHIP represents a risk factor and potential novel mechanism for inflammatory heart diseases; targeting CHIP and its downstream pathways may represent a strategy for preventing or treating pericarditis and myocarditis.
